Cantor, Huntsman address Washington and Lee students

There was much more than just the future GOP presidential nominee on the minds of speakers Friday night at the Washington and Lee Mock Convention.

President Obama’s policies, the economy, and getting young people involved in politics were all topics of speakers.

Republican House Majority Leader Eric Cantor blasted President Obama’s economic policies during Friday’s speech and offered one of his own.

Cantor unveiled a plan to cut small business taxes by 20 percent.

“What small business men and women are saying to me is that it’s just too difficult and too costly given the environment regulatory wise and tax wise to start and run a business,” Cantor said.

Students also heard from former Republican presidential nominee Jon Huntsman who spoke about the financial and moral deficit plaguing the country.

He said it’s important for young people to stay involved in politics.

“In order for this generation to have faith and a sense of confidence so that they can participate actively and openly,” Huntsman said. “They need to know that their voice will matter and their vote will matter. There are some fixes we’ll have to make.”

The students will make their final decision on who will the Republican nominee Saturday afternoon.
