Champis is quite a help at Nils-Erik and Greta Vigren’s farm in Sweden. He herds sheep, expertly bunching them and moving them around the barnyard.
What’s so odd about that, you ask? After all, you can see herding skills at any sheepdog trial.
Except, Champis isn’t a dog.
He’s a rabbit.
Greta Vigren said the now 5-year-old bunny first displayed his herding instincts last spring when they let out the sheep to graze for the first time after the long Swedish winter.
“He just started to behave like a sheepdog,” she said. “He’s like a king for the whole group. He thinks he rules over both the sheep and the hens. He has a very big ego.”
He’s more gentle with the hens, she notes.
A family friend who breeds dogs is impressed. “I work with sheepdogs and know how hard this is,” Dan Westerman said. “There are very few dogs that could do what this rabbit does.”
He thinks Champis must have picked up his skills just from watching dogs work.
Mr. Westerman is also the one who posted the now popular YouTube video of Champis doing his stuff. “It’s really incredible,” he said.
