Negative role models

Contrast these student achievements with the recent altercation at a Monticello High School basketball game. The game had to be suspended, and visiting Charlottesville High School players had to be escorted back to their bus with police oversight.

Now consider this: It was the parents who were to blame, according to Monticello High Athletics Director Fitzgerald Barnes.

The confrontation started in front of the MHS student section. Eight MHS players later were penalized with a one-game suspension.

Clearly, it wasn’t “only” parents who were involved. But that parents were involved at all is shocking — and discouraging. Students and parents alike needed better self-control.
