How do you promote foreign investment?
Depends on what kind of investment you’re looking for.
Officials in Kosovo probably didn’t want the kind of investment that their signage seemed to suggest.
Just before Kosovo declared independence in 2008, it unveiled a large statue in Pristina containing lettering that said “newborn.”
Later, the government decided to feature the artwork in Internet advertisements for investment.
But when the ad started appearing locally, some viewers complained that the lettering appeared to say “newporn.”
That’s because vandals had spray-painted the signage. Officials hadn’t noticed — but viewers sure did.
The government fixed the problem before the same commercials started appearing on television.
This incident regrettably reminds us of some vandalism done to at least one “Charlottesville” sign a while back. Since we don’t want to encourage a repeat, we won’t be too explicit about that.
You figure it out.
