Easily by mid-February, the robins were back, the maple and dogwood buds were swelling, and small early flowers — speedwell, dead nettle, stitchwort and the hardy dandelion — were blooming amid greening grasses.

 Ah, spring! In February.

But we were taken aback to see — less than 24 hours before the snowfall — a patch of brilliantly blazing buttercups along a local roadside.

Ah, summer?
