CULPEPER — The Old Rag Master Naturalists needs you: To volunteer, that is.
The chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalist Program is accepting applications for volunteers until Feb. 11.
The program’s orientation and introduction session will take place at the Madison Extension Office on Main Street in Madison at 9 a.m. March 13. The cost for training is $125.
Created in 2006, this local organization serves Culpeper, Madison, Rappahannock, Greene and the western portions of Fauquier and Orange counties.
The 40-hour training session teaches potential master naturalists education outreach skills, environmental stewardship and citizen science. The course also features basic ecology; biodiversity; research tools (taxonomy and classification, interpretation, basic science skills, key-based identification); botany and forest ecology; watersheds; water ecology; climate and weather; and native fauna.
“Old Rag’s training focuses on the ecosystems in its service area of the Piedmont and Blue Ridge regions of Virginia,” a news release stated.
The class, held from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesdays, will include 12 classroom sessions and five field trips to various sites on Saturdays.
