Public hearing set for Greene road improvements

The Virginia Department of Transportation will hold a public hearing on proposed improvements to an intersection in Greene County, according to a news release from the agency.

The meeting is scheduled for 5 to 7 p.m. Jan. 11 at Ruckersville Elementary School, at 105 Progress Place.

The $2.27 million project includes upgrades to the intersection of Matthews Mill Road (Route 607) and U.S. 29.

Plans include widening Matthew Mills Road to five lanes to improve safety and increase capacity at the intersection. The project would allow for an eastbound left turn lane into Sheetz and an additional westbound left turn lane onto 29.

A new traffic signal for the intersection is also proposed.

Matthews Mill Road serves as an alternate route for commuters between U.S. 29 in Ruckersville and U.S. 33 to the east. A number of development projects, both residential and commercial, are anticipated in close proximity to the project, the release said.

At its intersection with 29, the road has one eastbound through-lane, a westbound shared left turn and through-lane and a westbound right turn lane.

Matthew Mills Road carries 7,112 vehicles per day, according to a 2010 count.

Construction is anticipated to begin in fall 2014 and last approximately nine months.

Project plans, environmental documents and right-of-way and easement information will be available for review at the public hearing. The documents may also be viewed at the VDOT’s Culpeper District office, at 1601 Orange Road in Culpeper.

The agency asks anyone interested in viewing the documents contact VDOT at (540) 829-7500 or 1-800-367-7623.

Written and oral comments will be taken at the hearing.

Written comments may also be submitted by Jan. 23 to Barry Jones, Project Manager, 1601 Orange Road, Culpeper, VA 22701.

More information about the project can be found on VDOT’s website at http://www.virginiadot.org/projects/culpeper/rt._607_at_rt._29.asp.
