The city of Charlottesville has appointed Chris J. Engel as its next economic development director after Aubrey Watts decided to step down from the position.

Engel, who currently serves as the assistant economic development director, will take office on Feb. 1, according to a Thursday news release. The release says Watts intends to focus on his roles as the city’s chief operating officer and chief financial officer, as well as managing “the transition of the Charlottesville Redevelopment and Housing.”

City Manager Maurice Jones says Engel “has the credentials, the skills and the vision to build off of the great success we have had in economic development during the last decade.”

Engel has been employed by the city since 2005.
