VDOT seeks work on Thomas Jefferson Parkway

»  Comments | Post a Comment

The Virginia Department of Transportation has proposed three projects worth a total of $831,000 along a 1.7-mile stretch of Route 53 (the Thomas Jefferson Parkway) in Albemarle County.

The projects include widening the inside shoulder of the road at the entrance to Monticello and Kenwood Farm Lane, re-grading the side slopes at those entrances. VDOT also proposes to improve the turning radius at Route 53’s intersection with Route 20, and install more signs and a new guardrail at the intersection.

Money for the projects will come from the Highway Safety Improvement Program. According to a news release, VDOT expects to advertise the projects in February 2013 and have them completed by October of the same year.

Scottsville District Supervisor Christopher J. Dumler said he is excited about the project. Improvements like these, he said, carry a lot of value.

“It goes back to something I was talking about during the campaign,” he said. “That is that money is tight right now, and what we need to do on a local level … is identify high-priority projects. It’s cost-effective, it's bang for your buck, it’s a short-term project that will see results quicker.

VDOT will hold a public hearing on the two projects next Thursday at 5 p.m. at Piedmont Virginia Community College’s Stultz Center for Business and Career Development at 501 College Drive in Charlottesville.
