Elementarry students and the Occupy Movement

»  Comments | Post a Comment

I have heard about some opposition to Woodbrook Elementary School’s Kid Pan Alley performance, which I saw. I was impressed by the authenticity of the music and lyrics. The show was not canned, like so many elementary school performances, in which our children sing pre-written “children’s songs” to pre-recorded music. I was struck by the involvement of our children in the creation of the music.

I believe that many of our children have heard about the Occupy Movement from their parents, and they probably were interested in writing about it. My family has discussed Occupy Charlottesville quite a bit.

As a parent, educator and currently a school librarian, I have worked with elementary students for years, and the lyrics seem to me to reflect a child’s viewpoint of this movement. I support Woodbrook’s decision to bring Kid Pan Alley to our students.
