Better safe than 'right'

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Albemarle County police made the right decision in placing a charge of failure to yield right of way and launching an administrative review after an officer struck a jogger while making a right turn on red.

The jogger was described as wearing dark clothing and talking on a cell phone when the accident happened.

But …

If the light was red, halting traffic, the jogger had the right of way. It was the driver’s responsibility to avoid the pedestrian, not the pedestrian’s responsibility to avoid the car.

But …

Pedestrians should take responsibility for maximizing their own safety. Wearing dark clothing at dusk and being distracted by cell phone usage are not safe or smart things to do.

Being right isn’t the same as being safe. Being right and safe, now that’s an aim worth having.
