Albemarle County’s decision to permit small wind turbines in the county’s rural areas drew a lot of attention, but won’t amount to much. The little dudes are expensive and the county’s guidelines are so restrictive we can’t imagine many folks will show an interest in such expensive “green” technology.
Across this beautiful part of Virginia it’s not tiny turbines that could disrupt the quality of life and the viewshed. It’s those monstrous, industrial-size wind farms. Easy to sit here and think about how neat it would be to have Virginia show renewable energy leadership by putting a bunch of huge windmills off the coast, isn’t it?
But what about a wind farm in the George Washington National Forest in Nelson County? That’s not so easy to get excited about. No such proposal exists today that we are aware of. This very situation, however, has been playing out in a messy ongoing, slow-motion saga in Highland County just up the road. Get excited about a personal turbine and feel good about creating individual energy if you like. Then be ready to fight against anything on the scale of the Highland project.
