Union support for Perriello is troubling

»  Comments | Post a Comment

With great concern I have watched several ads on local television for 5th District Congressman Tom Perriello. The ads were paid for by the Service Employees International Union, the same union whose president was a key advisor to the White House on the health care bill.
The fact that an international union is trying to affect the outcome of the 5th District race is troubling. The greater concern is the content of the ads.
The ads praise Congressman Perriello for his vote for the health care bill and for standing up against the health insurance industry. Congressman Perriello and SEIU must view providing the insurance industry with an estimated 32 million new customers — at about $4,000 to $6,000 per year each, with payment guaranteed by the government, including enforcement and subsides when necessary — as standing up to the insurance industry.
Does this ad buy a 5th District vote for SEIU on the card check issue? Card check is a bill in Congress that would eliminate the use of the secret ballot when employees are deciding whether to unionize, which would make it easier for unions to pressure voters to organize at companies in right-to-work states like Virginia.
Congressman Perriello’s new international union friend and this sleight-of-hand make me wonder if he could still be right for the 5th District of Virginia this fall.
