U.S. Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr., R-Rocky Mount, will file for a recount in his race against Democrat Tom Perriello.
“Over the last few weeks, voters from across the 5th District have encouraged me to seek a recount of the election,” Goode said in a statement Monday. “Tomorrow, I will file the appropriate legal papers to request a recount of this Election.”
The Virginia State Board of Elections certified the results of the election Monday. According to official returns, Perriello defeated the six-term incumbent by a margin of 745 votes.
Perriello said Monday that he will respect Goode’s decision on the recount, but will continue moving forward with his transition as a new member of Congress.
