An Albemarle County woman is in critical condition and a Charlottesville woman is in serious condition after their car crossed the median of U.S. 29 near the U.S. 250 exit Monday night and struck an SUV head-on.

Brittany E. Jarrell, 20, of Albemarle County and Lindsey M. Spatz, 23, of Charlottesville were driving northbound on U.S. 29 when their 2007 Hyundai crossed the median and struck a 2005 Toyota Highlander driven by Tracey S. Wagner, 48, of Afton. The Hyundai, driven by Jarrell, hit a guard rail and overturned several time, throwing Jarrell and Spatz from the vehicle.

The Albemarle County Police Department accident investigation team kept portions of the road closed until early Tuesday. No cause has been determined.
