Local Latino and health advocacy groups are looking for people interested in becoming Community Health Promoters.
This opportunity is for Latinos living in the Southwood Estates Mobile Home Park in Albemarle County and its surrounding areas.
Training to become a promoter is under way through Nov. 6, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, at the Albemarle County Office Building on Fifth Street.
The free training will cover basic hygiene, dental and skin care, certification in CPR, first aid training, chronic diseases and child health, among other topics.
Trainees will be required to complete 38 hours of training to graduate. Graduates will then volunteer 20 hours at several community agencies.
After completing the training, graduates will be paid a small stipend for creating and executing a health promotion activity.
According to a 2007 survey, Latinos in the Southwood community often do not seek medical care for cultural and financial reasons.
The hope is that health promoters will help teach other residents about the connection between symptoms and specific health conditions, hopefully motivating people to seek medical care, a release from the Blue Ridge Medical Center said.
