A new arrow logo is expected to point Fluvanna residents in the right direction toward businesses and parks in the county.
“FluvannaFirst” is a new marketing strategy meant to raise awareness of the county’s job, shopping and recreational opportunities. During its Wednesday meeting, the county’s board of supervisors approved the logo, which will be used by county government and the Fluvanna County Chamber of Commerce. The logo officially debuted on Friday.
Vicki Karabinus, the county’s economic development coordinator, said the logo hopefully will remind Fluvanna residents of businesses in their home county.
“I think what some people don’t realize is that there is more to Fluvanna than meets the eye,” Karabinus said. “There is some shopping, work and recreation opportunity here. We don’t want to be just a bedroom community. We want to be more like a Charlottesville and Richmond, where people come, live, work and have social activities.”
Dave Sagarin, a photographer and designer from Fluvanna, created the logo.
Karabinus said she views the logo as a first step for economic development efforts in the county.
G. Cabell Lawton IV, the county administrator, said many of Fluvanna’s residents commute outside of the county for work. While they’re in neighboring localities, Lawton said, they often do their shopping there.
Lawton said some of the county’s retailers and restaurants saw “significant declines” in business due to the recession, although he does not know of any that closed.
“We want to let citizens know that they should be buying local, but we want to expand it to ‘work, shop and play,’” Lawton said. “There are a lot of opportunities to do a number of things.”
Karabinus said the county’s parks and recreation department has already requested the logo to put on its brochures for next season. Copies of the logo also are available to businesses and organizations in Fluvanna that want to support the marketing effort.
