Albemarle County authorities tried to rescue a bald eagle Tuesday, but the bird freed itself before they could render any aid.
A pair of kayakers reported the eagle was caught in some brush near a fence on the back side of Beaver Creek Reservoir.
It took authorities some time to round up a boat to cross the reservoir.
When Charlottesville-Albemarle Rescue Squad’s water rescue team arrived, an animal control officer and a wildlife rehabilitator from the Waynesboro-based Wildlife Center of Virginia climbed aboard the team’s boat, which set out from shore. But a kayaker met the rescue party as it was en route and said the bird was gone.
Suzanne Doell, wildlife rehabilitator for the Waynesboro center, said that bald eagles, which have a 6- to 8-foot wingspan, are becoming increasingly common in Virginia.
