Albemarle County Board of Supervisors Chairman David L. Slutzky said Monday that he will not challenge Del. Rob Bell, R-Albemarle County, in this fall’s elections.
Slutzky, a Democrat, had been exploring the possibility of running against Bell in recent months.
He planned to announce his decision at 5 p.m. today on “Charlottesville Right Now” with Coy Barefoot on 1070 WINA. Slutzky confirmed his decision to The Daily Progress two hours before the broadcast.
“I’m not running against Rob Bell,” Slutzky said.
Slutzky, who became chairman of the county board earlier this month, said he is tackling too many important issues at the local level to devote sufficient time to a “brutal” House of Delegates campaign.
“It’s not that I’m not interested in the job,” he said. “I just have too much important work to do this year.”
Unseating a well-funded incumbent like Bell, he added, would take a significant amount of time, resources and energy. Slutzky said he decided he needed to devote all his time and energy to the challenges facing Albemarle County.
