Long-time Democratic Party official Valerie L’Herrou has taken the reins of Albemarle County’s party.
L’Herrou was nominated and unanimously approved Monday night by the county party’s steering committee, on which she had served since 2001. She served as the committee’s secretary since 2006. Prior to joining the county’s party, she served on the steering committee of the Nelson County Democratic Party.
“I feel the principles and ideals of the Democratic Party are worth working for,” she said. “I feel very honored that the committee supported me.”
L’Herrou’s nomination and election followed Monday’s resignation of Fred Hudson as chairman, who was elected on June 13 to the second vice-chairman position of the state Democratic Party.
“The election we face this November is just too important to have a part-time chair,” Hudson said in an e-mail sent to the committee. “Valerie is committed to the process of party building, and I hope you share the confidence I have in her as she begins her new position.”
L’Herrou said she hopes to revitalize the Democratic Party in Albemarle County, the local offices of which have been dominated by Republicans and independent candidates.
L’Herrou said upcoming elections will be a primary concern.
“Our plans are to look for good candidates and, wherever possible, provide a good Democratic alternative,” she said.
