A tractor-trailer carrying a load of wet sawdust was responsible for a crash that tied up a portion of U.S. 29 near Interstate 64 for five hours Wednesday.
The driver may face charges after police discovered “major mechanical violations” on the trailer, said Albemarle County police Lt. Todd Hopwood.
The 2004 Kenworth tractor was pulling a trailer filled with sawdust that had gotten wet from a heavy rain the night before. As the driver exited from westbound I-64 onto southbound U.S. 29 around 9:30 a.m., Hopwood said, the load shifted and caused the driver to overturn.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident. The driver, whose name and company were not immediately available, was taken to the University of Virginia Medical Center for treatment.
Drivers heading southbound on U.S. 29 in that area were detoured onto westbound I-64, then signaled to turn off at the Ivy exit 4 miles away to get back on eastbound I-64 toward U.S. 29.
Hopwood said Wednesday that it isn’t unusual for tractor-trailers carrying heavy loads to lose control if the cargo shifts.
