U2 incidents, traffic match expectations

A U2 fan holds up a sign that reads “U2 is out of control” at Thursday’s concert at the University of Virginia’s Scott Stadium. A university spokeswoman says concert security kept alcohol-related shenanigans well under control. “What they dealt with was consistent with a football game,” Marian L. Anderfuren said.

About 10 people were arrested and six people were taken to the hospital during U2’s Thursday concert at the University of Virginia’s Scott Stadium.

About 55,000 people attended the concert, but UVa officials won’t release attendance or ticket sales numbers.

All of the arrests were alcohol related, said Marian L. Anderfuren, a university spokeswoman.

Alcohol was also the reason for one of the trips to the hospital, Anderfuren said. The other five people had a variety of conditions. EMTs also helped about 60 members of the public with minor issues, Anderfuren said.

“What they dealt with was consistent with a football game,” she said Friday.

It took about an hour and a half to clear traffic after the game, which caused backups on various roads, including Interstate 64, said Charlottesville police Lt. Gary Pleasants.

The congestion was expected, he said.

Charlottesville is an older city,” Pleasants said. “It’s not designed for things like this. When you put 50,000 people in the middle of the city, you can’t get them out that quickly.”

Officers from a variety of local law enforcement agencies worked overtime to provide security, but concert organizers reimburse the cost, Pleasants said.

The exact figures haven’t been worked out yet, Anderfuren said.
