Yoo to speak at UVa forum; protest planned

Protests are being organized in response to an appearance next month at the University of Virginia by , the author of legal memos during the Bush administration that authorized the use of waterboarding and other harsh interrogation techniques for suspected terrorists.

Yoo, who teaches at the University of California at Berkeley’s Boalt Hall Law School, has written a new book titled “Crisis and Command” that argues that presidents gain power at the expense of Congress during national security emergencies.

Yoo will appear at 11 a.m. March 19 at UVa’s Miller Center of Public Affairs for a discussion about his book. The event is open to the public.

Protesters are planning to march from the Corner at around 2 p.m. and then to demonstrate in front of Minor Hall starting at 3 p.m., in advance of a second appearance that day by Yoo, at 3:30 p.m. at Minor Hall, that protest organizers say Yoo will be making. The second appearance and whether it is open to the public could not be confirmed with UVa by press time Tuesday.

“Aggressive wars, torture, lawless imprisonment and warrantless spying are continuing because Yoo and his co-conspirators have not yet been prosecuted,” wrote protest organizer David Swanson in a news release. “And they are not being prosecuted because the new president is continuing the crimes. We must raise our voices for the rule of law.”
