U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, the CEO of Aramark and a Harvard University scientist will receive this year’s Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medals.
The medals are the highest honor awarded each year by the University of Virginia and the Thomas Jefferson Foundation in recognition of accomplishments in the fields of architecture, law and citizen leadership.
Napolitano, a 1983 graduate of the UVa School of Law, will receive the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Law.
Prior to becoming the third secretary of Homeland Security, Napolitano was governor of Arizona from 2002 to 2008.
Napolitano will deliver a speech at UVa, though details have not yet been finalized.
Receiving the Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Citizen Leadership will be Joseph Neubauer, the chairman and CEO of Aramark, a leading provider of food, hospitality, facility and uniform services with some 255,000 employees in 22 countries.
In addition to his leadership at the Philadelphia-based company, Neubauer established a scholarship program at Tufts University and a needs-based Horatio Alger Pennsylvania Scholars Program for high school seniors.
Neubauer will be the featured speaker at Monticello’s commemoration of Jefferson’s 267th birthday at 9 a.m. April 13 at the West Lawn of Monticello. The event is free and open to the public.
Edward O. Wilson, a Harvard scientist who developed and popularized the fields of sociobiology and biodiversity, will receive the Thomas Jefferson Founda-tion Medal in Architecture.
Wilson has promoted the concept of “biophilia,” which says that humans needed direct contact with nature to survive as they evolved over the millennia. His concept has been cited as designers and planners seek ways to incorporate eco-friendly elements into buildings and neighborhoods.
Wilson has authored more than 20 books, including two that have won the Pulitzer Prize.
Wilson will speak at 3 p.m. April 13 in Old Cabell Hall Auditorium. Tickets will be required, though the tickets will be free and available on a first-come, first-served basis from the UVa Arts Box Office in Culbreth Theatre starting April 1. Hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Each person may receive two tickets, and the tickets must be picked up in person.
