At a news conference this evening, Virginia State Police said they are “fairly confident” that the remains are of Harrington, a 20-year-old Virginia Tech student who went missing Oct. 17 during a concert at the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville.
During the press conference, authorities said “significant items” were found at the scene that led them to believe the remains are those of Harrington.
Authorities said the remains have been sent to the Medical Examiners Office in Richmond for official identification and for analysis. The ID results could be back as early as this evening.
Several times during the news conference, authorities made reference to the ongoing investigation to find the person or persons responsible for Harrington’s death.
The state police confirmed that Harrington’s parents are in the Charlottesville area today and have been brought up to date on the discovery and investigation.
Lt. Joe Rader of the state police said this is “a missing person case that now looks like a crime.”
Police would not disclose the nature of the items found or other details about the evidence.
The remains were found on remote farmland off Anchorage Farm Road off U.S. 29 south of Charlottesville.
A resident of Anchorage Farms, a 700-plus-acre tract of pasture and woods about fives miles south of Interstate 64 on the west side of U.S. 29, notified Albemarle County police this morning that he had found skeletal remains.
County police later notified the Virginia State Police and turned the investigation over to the detectives heading the Harrington investigation.
