A University of Virginia English professor received a top statewide teaching award Wednesday.
Lisa Russ Spaar has taught poetry at UVa for almost 15 years and is one of 12 teachers from Virginia’s public and private colleges and universities who received the Outstanding Faculty Award this year from the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia.
Spaar is the founder and director of the 10-year-old Poetry Writing Area Program for undergraduates in UVa’s creative writing English program.
Spaar has published three collections of poetry: “Satin Cash,” “Blue Venus” and “Glass Town,” and she’s edited two anthologies. Her work was also included in “Best American Poetry 2008.”
“Lisa Russ Spaar has risen from part-time status as a lecturer to a full professor in our department because of her poetic gifts, her legendary teaching, and her tireless contributions to the English Department and the university,” English Department Chairwoman Cynthia Wall stated in a UVa news release. “She has become one of our most valued and most beloved faculty.”
