The Golden Corral Buffet & Grill restaurant on Seminole Trail will be closing its doors this week-end after sitting as a fix-ture on U.S. 29 for 15 years.
Doreen Barrow, a spokeswoman for the Char-lottesville restaurant, confirmed that the business would be shutting down on Sunday. When asked whether the establish-ment’s 55 employees were being laid off, Barrow said the franchise was doing “everything we can do” to help employees find an-other job.
That included having other Golden Corral restau-rants come to Charlottes-ville to interview interested employees, she said.
All employees will also be given severance pack-ages based on seniority, Barrow said. Barrow de-clined to elaborate on how much notice employees were given, saying Golden Corral gave them more notice than most restau-rants in the industry.
“We gave them notice,” she said. “They already know, it’s more than a week out.”
The restaurant was un-able to renegotiate the lease for 1185 Seminole Trail, Barrow said. Prop-erty owner Irving Brown-field also said Thursday that Golden Corral did not exercise the option to renew its lease, a decision made in September.
Brownfield also said the property has been re-leased to another business but would not give the new tenant’s name.
