U.S. Rep. Tom Perriello, D-Ivy, was among the Democrats calling for U.S. Rep. Charlie Rangel to give up his gavel as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee.
Rangel, a New York Democrat, announced Wednesday that he would “temporarily” step down as chairman of the powerful committee amid an ongoing ethics probe.
A House ethics panel admonished Rangel last Thursday for attending two corporate-backed trips to the Caribbean. The panel is continuing to investigate several other allegations against Rangel.
The Republican Party of Virginia on Wednesday bashed Perriello for receiving a $7,000 campaign contribution from Rangel in 2008 and for not supporting a move to strip Rangel of his chairmanship.
Perriello, however, had called for Rangel’s removal on Wednesday and said he planned to return the campaign contribution from two years ago.
“Congressman Perriello does believe Charlie Rangel should resign his chairmanship,” Jessica Barba, Perriello’s press secretary, said. “And he will give the $7,000 to charity.”
