Virginia’s unemployment rate rose a slight one-tenth of a percent to 6.9 percent in January, after adjustments were made due to seasonal layoffs in retail, leisure and hospitality industries that traditionally occur after the holidays, according to figures released by the federal government and distributed by the Virginia Employment Commission.
The January figure is 1.2 percent higher than the adjusted unemployment rate in January 2009, state officials said. The state adjusted unemployment rate has varied from 6.7 percent to 6.9 percent since April 2009, officials said.
The state unemployment figure is nearly 3 percent less than the national rate of 9.7 percent reported in January.
