LEXINGTON — The University of Virginia lacrosse player charged in the death of a member of the women’s lacrosse team had a previous brush with the law a year-and-a-half ago.

George Huguely, 22, was arrested on charges of being drunk in public and resisting arrest while visiting friends in Lexington on Nov. 14, 2008.

Lexington police Patrolwoman R.L. Moss told the Washington Post on Tuesday that she responded to a 911 call near a fraternity house and found Huguely stumbling into traffic. She asked him if he had any friends who could come pick him up, so he could avoid spending the night in jail, she said.

“He said, ‘I’ll kill you. I’ll kill all of y’all. I’m not going to jail,’” the patrolwoman told the Washington Post.

His diatribe, the Post reported, included racial, sexual and otherwise vulgar profanities.

Moss told the Post that Huguely became combative and fought with her several minutes. She Tasered him and then handcuffed him, the newspaper reported.

“But that just pissed him off even more,” she told the Post. “He became a lot more aggressive.”

Eventually, however, Moss managed to subdue Huguely, the paper said.

Huguely spent the night in jail, court records show.

At his hearing in Lexington/Rockbridge County General District Court on Jan. 20, 2009, Huguely pleaded guilty to both charges.

For being drunk in public, Huguely had to pay a $100 fine. For the resisting arrest charge, he was sentenced to 60 days in jail, with all the time suspended. He was also required to perform 50 hours of community service, attend an alcohol and substance abuse assessment program and was given six months of probation.

Huguely completed his 50 hours of community service with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank in Charlottesville. “His work performance was rated as Excellent,” wrote Meaghan Fields, a probation officer.

He completed his 20-hour substance abuse assessment program on July 26.
