University of Virginia officials said today that they were unaware of George Huguely’s arrest for being drunk in public and resisting arrest a year-and-a-half ago in Lexington.
“We knew nothing about the incident in Lexington,” said Carol Wood, UVa’s spokeswoman.
Huguely, a member of UVa’s lacrosse team, is charged with first-degree murder in Monday’s killing of Yeardley Love, his ex-girlfriend and a member of UVa’s women’s lacrosse team.
Documents filed with Rockbridge County/Lexington General District Court show that Huguely spent the night in jail after a confrontation with a Lexington police officer.
The officer, R.L. Moss, told the Washington Post on Tuesday that she responded to a 911 call near a Washington and Lee University fraternity house and found Huguely stumbling into traffic. She told him that he could have a friend come pick him up or spend the night in jail.
“He said, ‘I’ll kill you. I’ll kill all of y’all. I’m not going to jail,’” the patrolwoman told the Post, adding that he launched into a diatribe that included racial and sexual vulgarities. The patrolwoman ultimately subdued Huguely with a Taser before arresting him, the newspaper reported.
Had UVa officials been made aware of the incident in Lexington, Wood said, Huguely would likely have been told to meet with an administrator from the Dean of Students’ Office and might have faced disciplinary action such as mandatory substance abuse counseling or a referral to UVa’s judiciary committee.
“We don’t hesitate to call students in whenever we know that something happened,” Wood said.
It was unclear this afternoon if Huguely’s coaches were aware of the incident in Lexington in November 2008. Neither Athletics Director Craig Littlepage nor men’s lacrosse head coach Dom Starsia returned a request for comment.
