The mother of George Huguely, the University of Virginia lacrosse player charged in the death of women’s lacrosse player Yeardley Love, has spoken out for the first time since her son was arrested.
“As a mother, I never expected to be in a situation like this,” Marta Murphy wrote in a statement released Tuesday. “Though my pain is great, it will never come close to the anguish felt by the Love family. Along with my family, I am devastated and confused. We are all trying to understand and cope as best we can”
Both Huguely and Love were 22 and fourth-year students at UVa when she died. Her body was found at about 2:15 a.m. May 3.
Within hours of the discovery of Love’s body, Huguely had been arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
Much of the statement discusses the Love family. Murphy remembers Yeardley Love as “sweet” and “wonderful.” She describes the pain the Love family is feeling as “something that no family should ever have to endure.” She writes that her family is thinking of and praying for the Love family.
Murphy also addresses what her own family is going through, and of her love for her son.
“Also as a mother, I hope that people can understand that both George’s father and I love our son,” she wrote. “We will support George in whatever way we can — just as any mother or father would do for their child.”
Murphy wrote that she made the statement in response to numerous press inquiries. At the statement’s conclusion, she asked for privacy to allow Huguely’s family to grieve and cope.
This is only the second time someone closely connected to Huguely — who is being held at the Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail — has commented. After his first appearance in court, one of his attorneys read a statement that called Love’s death “an accident with a tragic outcome.”
After Love’s body was discovered in her apartment, facedown on a bloody pillow, Huguely told police that he had kicked through her bedroom door and shaken her as her head bounced off the wall, according to court documents.
Police searched Huguely’s apartment and seized several items, including a UVa lacrosse T-shirt with a red stain.
The Love household declined to comment Tuesday.
