Virginia House refuses to consider Landes' bill to reopen rest stops

The Virginia House of Delegates Wednesday killed any chance of considering Del. Steve Landes’ bill on reopening Virginia’s closed rest stops and VDOT residency offices.

The House passed by a vote of 82-7 a resolution limiting legislation to be considered during the special called session, which was called by the governor to address a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

Landes, R-Weyers Cave, drafted the legislation calling for an immedate reopening of the 19 closed rest stops and VDOT residency offices.

Del. Ben Cline, R-Lexington, a co-sponsor of the Landes legislation, said “we consider both the residencies and rest areas to be important public safety institutions.“

Cline said Gov. Timothy Kaine “needs to take another look at his VDOT budget and find the money to keep the residencies and rest stops open.“
