Regulation was not enough time to decide a winner between Covenant and Monticello on Monday night. After almost 67 minutes of back-and-forth action, the Eagles defeated the Mustangs 1-0 in overtime.

The first half started off stagnant for both Covenant and Monticello as neither team could get a shot off in the first 15 minutes. With under five minutes remaining, Covenant senior and University of Virginia commitment Taylor Brown scored from point blank range. Unfortunately for Brown and the Eagles, the ball did not clear the circle and the goal would be nullified.

Still tied at zero midway through the second half, the Eagles fired four shots in the span of one minute, but Gina Weigold and the Mustang defense stood tall in the face of adversity. This is Weigold’s first season starting at goalkeeper for the Mustangs. Head coach Katie Owens had high praise for her senior leader.

“She has been tremendous for us this year,” Owens said of Weigold's play. “When we get in our huddles, I let her speak first.”

The Mustangs had a chance to win in regulation when Natalie Noble drove the ball the length of the field, but Noble could not get a good shot off which sent the game to overtime.

In the extra period, Brown scored the game winner with 7:03 left, sending the Covenant sideline into a frenzy.

“We get that moment where we have an opportunity goal scoring opportunity and we do well under pressure," said the future Cavalier

“We’ve always been competitive with Monticello.” Covenant head coach Kate Lavie added. “Both teams played incredibly and I’m real happy we were able to come up with the win,”

Despite the loss, Owens drew a lot of positives from the game and was proud of how her team fought until the end.

“We played hard,” Owens said. “The girls really tried to go after this win. We just have to connect better still.”

The Eagles will host North Cross today, while the Mustangs will be back in action on Thursday against Louisa.
