PALMYRA — In its last regular-season home game of the year, the Fluvanna boys basketball team put on a show, easily disposing of visiting Powhatan, 80-51, to secure at least a tie for first place in the Jefferson District.
The Flucos came out strong in the first quarter and led 18-9 after the first eight minutes. Fluvanna guard Yaya Anderson controlled the tempo for the Flucos, frequently igniting the raucous crowd with his passing.
The second quarter began as the first had gone, with Powhatan seemingly outmatched against a more talented Fluvanna lineup. Trailing 36-18 with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter, Powhatan got back in the game, outscoring the Flucos 13-2 to go into the half down seven, 38-31. Powhatan junior Chris DeLeon led the charge with four 3-pointers in the second quarter.
Fluvanna regrouped and dominated the second half. Led by Anderson, who connected on three 3-pointers in the first four minutes of the third, the Flucos pulled away and closed the quarter up 62-44.
There was little Powhatan could do in the fourth to close the gap. Much to the delight of the devoted Fluvanna crowd, the Flucos finished strong, earning a 29-point victory. Powhatan was led by DeLeon with 18 points while Anderson led Fluvanna with 19.
“I thought our kids came out and played really hard and then got a lead and kind of went on a lull and let them back in the game by not playing defense. In the second half we came out and played much better,” said Fluvanna coach Munro Rateau. “I told the team after the game if we’re going to keep winning we better play like we did in the second half for all 32 minutes.”
