Western Albemarle girls dispatch Fluvanna

It’s been a struggle on the offensive side of the ball all season for coach Kris Wright and his Western Albemarle girls basketball team. Fortunately for the Warriors, defense has kept them in the majority of their games and did the same Friday night.

Thanks to a stingy defensive effort, Western Albemarle (8-12) came away with a 35-19 win over Fluvanna County in the quarterfinals of the Jefferson District tournament, propelling the Warriors into the semifinals on Tuesday night.

“Defensively is kind of where we try to start,” Wright said. “We know if we can keep the score down, we at least have a chance. Tonight we did great in the first half of that and that allowed us to build a lead.”

The Flucos were unable to get anything going on the offensive end early on as the Warriors jumped out to a 23-9 halftime lead. The lead grew to 17 (30-13) after three quarters and Fluvanna got no closer than 13 for the remainder of the game.

“We didn’t really run away with the game,” Wright said. “We were able to keep them at an arm’s length the rest of the way though by playing great defense.”

Bridget Schaffrey had a solid night for WAHS, scoring 10 points, grabbing eight rebounds and blocking three shots. Senior Sydney Fewell led the way for the Warriors, scoring a game-high 15 points while dishing out four assists.

“Somewhere around late December the team started to look to her [Fewell] as the emotional leader,” Wright said. “Once they started looking at her to do that, she became much more comfortable with the basketball. She’s delivered since then and that’s very important for us.”

Fluvanna was led by senior Millicent Williams, who scored 12 points.

Western Albemarle plays Monticello in the semifinals of the Jefferson District tournament on Tuesday night.
