PALMYRA — A little less than a week removed from its upset loss to Charlottesville in the semifinals of the Jefferson District Tournament, the Fluvanna County boys basketball team got back on track Tuesday night with a 83-56 home win over Warren County in the first round of the Group AA, Region II Tournament.
The Flucos got off to the strong start they wanted after a couple of lackluster performances late in the regular season. Behind a bevy of 3-pointers and good defense, Fluvanna took a 23-13 lead after one quarter and extended its lead to 21 at halftime, 42-21.
“It’s unusual for us to get off to that kind of start,” Fluvanna coach Munro Rateau said. “I was really pleased, we made some early 3s and sometimes we get caught up in that and don’t go into the post. We kept making them though so I couldn’t tell them not to shoot.”
Fluvanna made four 3-pointers in the first quarter but hit just two for the remainder of the game.
Warren County tried to make a run in the third quarter and got within 18 points but would get no closer as the Flucos flexed their muscles offensively and defensively.
Fluvanna recorded 13 steals, four of those coming from senior YaYa Anderson. Anderson filled the stat sheet once again, finishing with 26 points, five rebounds and four assists to lead three Flucos who scored in double figures. Freshman Vinny Agee finished with 16 points while Jalen Harrison added 11 for Fluvanna.
“We wanted to get him [Jalen] the ball in the post,” Rateau said. “He’s such a good scorer and we got him the ball and he did a really good job of scoring for us.”
Warren County was led by junior Matt Nicholson, who recorded a team-high 25 points and pulled down nine rebounds. Senior Dakota Pratcher chipped in with 19 points, which included four 3-pointers.
Fluvanna will now play Charlottesville on Thursday night in the Shoe Box in the regional semifinals.
