Littlepage: Starsia will return as UVa men's lacrosse coach

Virginia athletic director Craig Littlepage put to rest any rumors about the future of Cavaliers' men's lacrosse coach Dom Starsia on Saturday with a brief statement through Rich Murray, the school's associate director of athletics for public relations.

"Coach Starsia has my support and he will be the coach of the Virginia men's lacrosse team next season," Littlepage said in the statement.

Rumors had been circulating at the NCAA Final Four in Baltimore last weekend and again on Thursday night at the Tewaarton Trophy dinner in Washington, D.C., speculating about the Hall of Famer Starsia's job status.

Littlepage was asked earlier in the week about squelching the rumors and referred to a statement he had made to the Associated Press a week earlier that read, "It has been my privilege to work with Dom Starsia these past 18 years and I look forward to many more seasons together."

However, many observers in the sport didn't feel that particular statement was clear as to whether it would be Littlepage's decision. Littlepage said through Murray that he was only attempting to be consistent with his statement, but issued a stronger, clearer statement as a result.

Starsia's Cavaliers lost in the NCAA semifinals to eventual champion Duke last week. His job security has been the topic of rumors since the death of UVa women's player Yeardley Love in early May. Former Cavalier men's player George Huguely has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with Love's death.
