On Friday, a really tough week got worse for Virginia men’s lacrosse coach Dom Starsia. Starsia’s father, Dominic Joseph Starsia, passed away following a prolonged illness. He was 86.
Dom Starsia had been taking care of his father, who was living with him, since February.
Dominic Starsia grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y. He was a retired New York City policeman and a World War II veteran who had lived in Charlottesville since 1998.
Until this season, he attended all of Virginia’s home games.
Dominic Starsia is survived by six children — Dom, Christine, Richard, Gerry, Mary Beth and Tim — 15 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
No funeral arrangements have been made.
The death of Dominic Starsia comes just four days after Virginia men’s lacrosse player George Huguely was charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of women’s lacrosse player Yeardley Love on Monday.
On Saturday, members of the Virginia men’s team are scheduled to travel to Baltimore for Love’s funeral.
